Philosophy

Different meshing strategies are available for spatial discretization of the problem. The right choice of meshing procedure is typically problem dependant and requires experience. There exist certain types of flow, for which accurate CFD simulations may only be possible using structured grids. In other cases, usually where the geometry is very complex, only unstructured grids may represent a viable way. Regarding the decision on the right meshing strategy, it is our job to determine the most efficient method which we base on our long experience in CFD simulation. Unstructured grids are characterized by irruglar node connectivity which increases the number of element type to be used with this method. Most commonly, tetrahedra, polyhedra, pyramids or wedges are used. The most significant advantage of unstructured grids lies in their flexibility and as they are not bound to any specific type of element shape. However, numerical errors of unstructured grids are typically higher than those of structured grids. Although the mesh generation is automatic in large parts, user experience is needed for the generation of high quality unstructured meshes. As the grid is one of the main factors of influence with regards to numerical errors, this is a specifically important aspect.

Structured grids are characterized by regular node connectivity, thus the possible number of element types to be used with strcutured grids is very limited. Typically, hexahedral elements are used. Their advantage lies in the potentially high element quality as well as the full control over local resolutions (e.g. for a boundary layer).
